NOTE: The area on the East River north of 34th Street, including the current site of the United Nations, was home to stockyards and slaughterhouses in the 1860s.
Joseph Jackson (colored), aged 19, living in West Fifty-Third Street, near Sixth Avenue, was in the industrious pursuit of his humble occupation of gathering provender for a herd of cattle, and when near the foot of Thirty-Fourth Street, East River, July 15, was set upon by the mob, killed, and his body thrown into the river.
